Gajes in de Bajes

Utrecht β˜… 7,4 (escapetalk 7.4) Closed 1 room

About this venue

Gajes in de Bajes was a prison escape in nine actual cells of the Wolvenplein prison (1856), the oldest preserved cellular prison in the Netherlands. The game was based on the true story of Gerrit Boef, a prisoner who actually escaped from Wolvenplein β€” you completed his escape within an hour, after a tour through the prison building that reviewers consistently named as the major highlight. The atmosphere of the authentic cells scored highly (8.2 on escapetalk), but the game itself was modest: lots of reading and calculation work in one space (game experience 6.4). The escape room closed in 2020, not due to lack of success but because the temporary lease ended when the state sold the prison for redevelopment.
