About this venue
Bijlmerbajes Ontgrendeld was a temporary escape room played in the actual Bijlmerbajes, the notorious Amsterdam prison that housed the Netherlands' most serious criminals for almost 40 years. Players became 'prisoners': everyone started alone in an actual cell with their own lock and had to share information after escaping to break out of the wing together. Staff played guards, making the experience particularly realistic, and reviewers praised the authenticity, strong storyline and surprisingly clever puzzles ('truly a team effort'). The room opened in May 2017 and closed permanently on 27 January 2019 when the prison complex was demolished for redevelopment — the end was due to the building, not lack of interest. The number of public reviews is small, so the high scores are indicative.
