About this venue

Onder de Toren is a café in a monumental building next to the St. Laurentiuskerk in the centre of Oud Gastel; the escape room in the basement was a side activity that the owners built during the corona lockdowns from their hobby for wine. You were locked in the old wine cellar with a flashback to around 1900, when the space housed prisoners and later stored beer and wine; 'wine is the only way out'. The special thing was the hospitality woven into the game: for €75 you got 90 minutes, four drinks and snacks, some of which you first had to 'puzzle free'. The data was thin (escapetalk 5.0 based on one review): the reception was called warm-hearted, but the puzzles and story came in for criticism ('as random as anything') and the low basement wasn't suitable for tall people. The escape room has since closed and disappeared from the website; under the same owner, Carpe Diem café-restaurant now operates upstairs.
