Escape Room Gevangenpoort, locally called 'Escape the Gate', is set in the basement cell of the 14th-century Gevangenpoort in Bergen op Zoom — one of the oldest city gates in the Netherlands, which served as a prison until the 20th century. In 'De Vergeten Cel' you get 'accidentally' locked up and have 60 minutes to escape, while the room takes you through four centuries of real prisoner history. It is deliberately low-tech: no visible cipher locks or electronics, but mechanical puzzles hidden in authentic artefacts, so the historic building itself is the decor. The ticket includes a year pass for the monument and a guided tour afterwards. Visitors are enthusiastic (9.2/10): the place 'breathes history', the atmosphere fits the city, and the passionate owner talks long after the game. There are hardly any complaints — as long as you know it's a puzzle room, not a spectacle.
