Escape Room Gevangenpoort, locally called 'Escape the Gate', plays out in the dungeon cell of the 14th-century Gevangenpoort in Bergen op Zoom — one of the oldest city gates in the Netherlands, which served as a prison until the 20th century. In 'De Vergeten Cel' you get 'accidentally' locked in and have 60 minutes to escape, while the room takes you through four centuries of real prison history. It's deliberately low-tech: no visible combination locks or electronics, but mechanical puzzles hidden in authentic artefacts, so the historic building itself forms the décor. The ticket includes a year pass to the monument and a guided tour afterwards. Visitors are enthusiastic (9.2/10): the place 'breathes history', the atmosphere fits the town, and the passionate owner chats long after you've finished. Complaints are rare — as long as you know it's a puzzle room, not a spectacular show.
